What is hybrid heating?

Hybrid heating is where homeowners have both a furnace and a heat pump. Normally, switching is done based on outdoor temperature alone. The GreenBox adds a layer of controls to help the homeowner reduce costs and carbon emissions.

Hybrid heating is becoming increasingly popular for homeowners replacing old air conditioners with heat pumps.

Problem:
Homeowners are looking for simple, effective ways to lower utility bills and cut carbon

Solution:
The GreenBox is an affordable, hassle-free solution that optimizes heating equipment to reduce energy costs and and emissions

How it works

  • Adds a layer of controls on top of normal thermostat operation and can add on to older, simpler thermostats to enable hybrid system operation

  • Does not interfere with normal equipment operation
including, for example, defrost cycling and startup surges

  • Switching can be based on time of use rates, grid emissions, overall efficiency, and/or demand response signals

  • Helps customers reduce utility bills and GHGs

how it works.png

Installation is simple and can be done by any qualified HVAC technician with minimal training, without the need for electricians or any inspections

Benefits

Cuts utility bill

Anywhere from $60 to $200+ per year by switching between a gas furnace and electric heat pump based on time of use rates

Low cost purchase and operation

To help homeowners save money without any ongoing subscription or monthly charges for basic service

Carbon reduction

Between 100 and 300 kg per year for a typical Ontario home, based on IESO grid emission factors

Works with Any thermostat, furnace and heat pump

Allowing homeowners to choose their preferred brand of thermostat, heat pump and furnace and not have to alter their normal daily routines

Carbon reduction of up to 300 kg per year for a typical Ontario home,
(Based on switching away from gas-fired electricity to gas furnace for heating during peak hours)
Based on a 15 year lifespan, emissions are reduced by 2.9 tonnes CO2 per home.
Adjusting heat pump and furnace efficiency can vary the carbon reductions from 100 kg to 300 kg per year,
